Company hopes to extract helium beneath Lake County in northeastern Minnesota ISABELLA, Minn. — A company eyeing helium extraction in northeastern Minnesota’s Duluth Complex is planning on more exploratory drilling this winter in hopes of confirming what a 2011 sample found: North America’s second-highest concentration of helium.The so-called “appraisal borehole” will be drilled next to the hole sunk 12 years ago by a drill crew looking for copper, nickel and other metals between Cleveland-Cliffs’ Peter Mitchell Mine and Isabella.In doing so, the crew accidentally discovered a pocket of gas 1,800 feet underground. The company, DMC USA, was a subsidiary of Duluth Metals, which would keep its focus on copper-nickel mining and become Twin Metals.But British Columbia-based Pulsar Helium Inc., which formed in 2019 and went public on the Toronto Stock Exchange’s Venture Exchange in August 2023, heard about their finding. Man accused of stealing, holding French bulldogs for ransom RED WING, Minn. — A warrant was issued for a 37-year-old Minneapolis man accused of dognapping five French bulldogs and holding them for ransom, according to new charges filed in Goodhue County.Mikiyel Deshone Patton is charged with felony theft with the intent to restore only for a reward. No court date has been set.According to the criminal complaint:The dog’s owner called the Cannon Falls Police Department on Dec. 2, to report that Patton had stolen the puppies, valued at $15,000 each, while she slept.The complaint claims Patton put the puppies in a backpack earlier that morning and left her residence. Patton had agreed to take care of the dogs while he stayed at the owner’s house.The owner contacted the department the next day to report that Patton had posted a picture of the puppies on Facebook, the complaint says. Missouri investing millions to reduce maternal mortality rate JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The state is making a historic investment in a maternal mortality prevention plan after Missouri has one of the highest rates of pregnancy-related deaths in the country.In a new report from the state, an average of more than 60 Missouri women died while pregnant or within one year after giving birth between 2018 and 2020. Those in the medical field say the most sobering piece of the report is that nearly 85% of those deaths were preventable."It didn't happen overnight, and it didn't happen from one single cause," Department of Health and Senior Services Maternal Child Health Director Martha Smith said. Suspect arrested in fatal Edgewater road rage shooting at Tesla charging station A 39-year-old Denver man was arrested Tuesday in connection with a fatal road rage shooting at a Tesla supercharger station outside Edgewater Public Market in May.Jeremy Smith was arrested by Edgewater police on suspicion of second-degree murder and manslaughter in the death of 33-year-old Adam Fresquez on May 3.According to a news release from the Edgewater Police Department, Fresquez and Smith arrived at the charging station at Edgewater Public Market, 5505 W. 20th Ave., within seconds of each other at approximately 9:39 a.m.Investigators determined that Fresquez and Smith, both driving Teslas, were involved in a road rage incident that culminated in Fresquez being maced and shot twice in the back. 3 L.A. residents busted with 'booster bags' for stealing retail merchandise Three residents of Los Angeles were arrested in Ventura County earlier this month after they were found to be in possession of special bags that allow shoplifters to leave a store without triggering an alarm.On Dec. 1, Maicol Silva, 32, Geradin Gonzalez-Morales, 30, and Daniela Beltran-Rojas, 28, were arrested by Ventura County Sheriff's Department deputies as they left Camarillo Premium Outlets in Camarillo.Deputies responded to the outlet mall after receiving reports of a possible theft from one of the stores.
