No spider bite or fainting spell at the US Open for Tommy Paul and his family. Just another win

NEW YORK (AP) — When Tommy Paul was a kid growing up in Greenville, North Carolina, his family would drive the 500 or so miles up to New York the week before the U.S. Open to watch qualifying matches — “It was free,” he notes — and catch a glimpse of some pros practicing.A couple of times, according to Paul, those treks involved a visit to an emergency room on the tournament grounds: his sister was bitten by a poisonous spider; his mother passed out and hit her head after seeing a player get badly injured. “Every year,” Paul said, “we always had something terrible happen.”This trip to Flushing Meadows is going far more smoothly so far for Paul — and other American men. The 26-year-old Paul, the No. 14 seed, earned a debut appearance in the fourth round at the U.S. Open by hitting 15 aces and getting broken just once during a 6-1, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 victory over No. 21 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain in Arthur Ashe Stadium on Friday.“I was kind of, like, ‘Really, they’re putting me o...

I was attracted by the club’s project,” said Kolo Muani, who grew up in the Paris suburbs. “Now I can’t wait to get to work and finally play in these colors.”PSG and Eintracht reportedly agreed terms much earlier in the day, but the deal was frozen because PSG forward Hugo Ekitiké rejected three offers to join Eintracht as part of the deal.Kolo Muani will form an all-French attack alongside World Cup star Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé — who all played for Les Bleus at last year’s World Cup — and under-21 winger Bradley Barcola.Acquiring Kolo Muani is a big boost for new coach Luis Enrique, after losing Argentina’s World Cu...

Pettersen: 90% fentanyl comes into US through ports

DENVER (KDVR) — New data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection shows fentanyl seizures are starting to decrease as we head into fall.Back in April, authorities seized more than 3,100 pounds of fentanyl, but now the number is closer to 1,700 pounds. That is slightly less than the same time last year. Some Colorado Republicans on Capitol Hill, including U.S. Rep. Ken Buck and U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert, blame the influx of fentanyl on our streets to migrants crossing the border. Buck previously told Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, “When people die of fentanyl poisoning, it’s your fault.” Denver Mayor Mike Johnston responds to criticism over closing encampment U.S. Rep. Brittany Pettersen reacted to the data this week on "Colorado Point of View," months after her first bill was introduced to investigate cartels bringing fentanyl into the U.S. The Democrat said that what Buck addressed was stigma rhetoric and misinformation. She added, “We absolutely need security at t...

Grayson Rodriguez’s first stint in the major leagues didn’t go well. Adley Rutschman struggled for his first month as a big leaguer. Gunnar Henderson started his first full MLB season slowly.Orioles prospect Colton Cowser is hoping he’s able to bounce back the way his friends did.“It definitely gives you confidence,” Cowser said about his predecessors’ success after their early stumbles.Cowser, who was recalled Friday as rosters expanded from 26 to 28 players, made his MLB debut July 5, and while the 23-year-old had a couple big moments, he largely struggled at the plate. In 77 plate appearances across 26 games, Cowser slashed .115/.286/.148 for a .433 OPS. By the end of his stint, he rarely played, totaling just 10 at-bats in the Orioles’ 12 games in August before he was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk.“I don’t think I necessarily did anything wrong. I think that I was trying to do too much, I guess I would say, putting a little bi...

Mets Notebook: Dominic Leone back in New York for second time this week

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:08:07 GMT

Typically the term journeyman refers to players who have played for several organizations throughout their career. Dominic Leone took that term to another level by playing in four of them this season alone, including the Mets, who he faced for the second time in five days this weekend with the Seattle Mariners at Citi Field for three games. The right-hander started the season with the Texas Rangers this spring and was assigned to Triple-A Round Rock out of camp. He pitched so well that it got him a job with the Mets. But then the Mets traded him to the Angels at the deadline on Aug. 1, and the Halos placed him and all of their other trade-deadline acquisitions on waivers WednesdayThe organization that drafted him claimed him Thursday, which meant he was right back on a plane to New York.“We literally had just landed,” Leone told the Daily News on Friday at Citi Field. “So we went to Philly after this series with Anaheim. And we had just landed back in San Francisco,...

All this time, Jasson Domínguez has been tuning out the hype: ‘I was just really focused on what I was doing’

HOUSTON — The day Jasson Domínguez signed his first professional contract, the outfielder returned to his academy in the Dominican Republic and gave all his equipment away to his teammates. With a $5.1 million deal freshly inked, Domínguez, only 16 at the time, could afford new bats and gloves. Still, that act spoke to why the Yankees were willing to invest such a lump sum of money on a kid barely old enough to drive. When you’re talking about contracts that big, skills aren’t the only thing taken into consideration.“What I didn’t know the first day I saw him, but I learned over time, was that his makeup was just absolutely off the charts,” Donny Rowland, the Yankees’ director of international amateur scouting, told the Daily News. “Very humble, engaging, friendly, never wanting to attract attention to himself. When you’d give him a compliment, he would kind of give you a sheepish grin and shake his head back and forth. N...

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Police in New Mexico’s capital city on Friday were investigating the partial destruction of a public monument to a 19th century frontiersman and U.S. soldier who had a leading role in the death of hundreds of Native Americans during Anglo-American settlement of the American West. The monument to Christopher “Kit” Carson has been encircled by a plywood barrier for its own protection since 2020, when Santa Fe was swept by the movement to remove depictions of historical figures who mistreated Native Americans amid a national reckoning over racial injustice. The monument’s upper spire was toppled Thursday evening. Photos showed an abandoned pickup truck and cable that may have been used to inflict the damage. Last year, the monument was splattered with red paint by activists on Indigenous Peoples’ Day.Carson carried out military orders to force the surrender of the Navajo people by destroying crops, livestock and homes.
