The person who was shot, 30-year-old Antioch man Daniel Mackin, survived the shooting. According to police, the incident began at about 7:41 a.m. when an Antioch community service officer came across two vehicles on the 200 block of West 3rd Street that were suspected of being involved in a recent burglary. Slovenia to introduce border checks with Hungary and Croatia after Italy did the same with Slovenia

LJUBLJANA, Slovenia (AP) — Slovenia said Thursday it will introduce border checks with neighboring Hungary and Croatia following Italy’s decision to do the same with Slovenia because of security concerns due to violence in the Middle East. The government said border controls will be introduced on Saturday and last for at least 10 days. Italy on Wednesday said it will suspend an open-border agreement with Slovenia, also on Saturday and for 10 days. The decisions reflect increasing security concerns in Europe because of the war between Israel and Hamas. European Union interior ministers on Thursday debated how to manage the impact of the war on the 27-nation bloc after a firebomb assault on a Berlin synagogue and killings in Belgium and France by suspected Islamic extremists.EU Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson said in Luxembourg that the commission is looking into the issue of internal border checks, which she described as one of the challenges of the Schengen area. “Even...

As Israel readies troops for ground assault, Gaza awaits urgently needed aid from Egypt

KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israel pounded the Gaza Strip with airstrikes Thursday, including in the south where Palestinians were told to take refuge, as the Israeli defense minister ordered ground troops to prepare to see Gaza “from the inside”, though he didn’t indicate when the ground assault would begin. Gaza’s overwhelmed hospitals tried to stretch out ebbing medical supplies and fuel for generators, as authorities worked out logistics for a desperately needed aid delivery from Egypt. Doctors in darkened wards across Gaza performed surgeries by the light of mobile phones and used vinegar to treat infected wounds.Amid the violence, President Joe Biden pledged unwavering support for Israel’s security, “today and always,” while adding that the world “can’t ignore the humanity of innocent Palestinians” in the besieged Gaza Strip. In an address Thursday night from the Oval office, hours after returning to Washington from an urgent visit to Israel, Biden drew a distin...

CSX boss wants railroad to keep improving service as profit falls 24%

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:00:44 GMT

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — CSX reported a 24% drop in the railroad’s third-quarter profit Thursday as it hauled 2% less freight, but the CEO said customers are noticing that its trains are running more smoothly. The Jacksonville, Florida-based railroad said it earned $846 million, or 42 cents per share, in the quarter. That’s down from $1.1 billion, or 52 cents per share, a year ago. The results fell just short of the 43 cents per share that Wall Street was expecting, according to a survey of analysts done by FactSet Research. The railroad’s results show a mix of demand across various industries with a strong 19% jump in auto shipments and 9% growth in coal carloads nearly offsetting weak demand for consumer products and agricultural shipments. CSX improved the speed of its trains to an average of 17.6 mph in the quarter from 15.8 mph a year ago showing that its network was operating smoothly.“Over the third quarter, our efforts centered on delivering the reliable customer s...

Open up: Rangers’ retractable roof open for Game 4 of ALCS against Astros

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:00:44 GMT

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The roof was open for Game 4 of the AL Championship Series on Thursday night, the first home game for the Texas Rangers in nearly five months without it closed. That retractable roof at Globe Life Field was last opened for a game May 21. The Rangers started 11 games with the roof open during the regular season and were 7-4. That included opening day against the Philadelphia Phillies on March 30, the only time in the stadium’s four seasons that the roof was open before being closed during the middle of a game because of a threat of rain. The game time temperature was 78 degrees with clear skies. Games 1 and 2 of the ALCS were played with the roof closed at Minute Maid Park, the Houston Astros’ retractable-roof stadium. When neutral-site postseason games were played at Globe Life Field during the 2020 season impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the roof was open for 13 of 16 of those games. It was open for all three NL Division Series games and all sev...
